Comments: MAC to Zoom Rhythm Track 234?
Q?. What is the best way to "play" the 234 from my Mac? That is, what is the cheapest easiest way? (Software I need. Where can I find specific connection info?)
My eqipment includes Mac 6500/250/48 running System 9.0, Altech Midiface SX interface and cabling and Zoom Rhythm Track 234 (Midi In only).
I am a MIDI newbie - I want to be able to play downloaded files to the rhythm trac to accompany me while I abuse my guitar (and any ears within range).
Thanks for your consideration |

Comments: I have downloaded some excellent midi files along with sheet music from the net especially for fingerstyle guitar. I would like to transfer these files to a CD as I have a burner in able to practice and play along. I would appreciate any information on how to do this. Keep it simple since I'm not very knowledgeable on MIDI music. If I need additional software I am willing to purchase it. Thanks. |

Comments: I am new to MIDI. Just bought my son an Alesis 8.1 keyboard which he wants to interface with his original 233mHz iMac. Any informed suggestions on an interface that will be sufficient for the 64note polyphony of the keyboard without overspending? Please email me at NOHAV@aol.com so I don't have to constantly check the bulletin board. I appreciate your help.

Comments: Hello, I was curious if anyone has ever heard of any macintosh application that creates jazz music based on mathematical equations and then writes it up as a midi file. I remember using such a program, I believe it was called jazzMac... though I have searched for that and have found nothing. Perhaps someone can refer me to a specific website or programmer whose interests are based upon mathematically generated music, and/or progressive chaotic systems in music. I am working on a music project at my college involving Bach, and I am trying to work through the equations of his music. I would really appreciate any leads on the software/freeware/shareware listed above, as it would be a great help in further understanding Bach.
Thank you for reading,

Comments: I recently bought a new iMac DV (to replace my old Performa) Since all peripherals are now connected via USB I had to buy a new MIDI Interface (Midiman 2 x 2) which only reads OMS and not MIDI Manager.
OMS is fine for Band-in-a-Box and some other programs from PG Music.
But ALL of my sequencing programs (Musicshop, MasterTracksPro, Balladed) require MIDI Manager. Does anyone know of a USB Interface that can read MIDI Manager, or any Mac sequencing software that is easy to use, such as Musicshop? Please email me with any suggestions.

Comments: Hi there! I need some advice. I play with a pal in touristic villages around the world, and we use SMF on which we play guitar and sing.
Now we want to renew our equipment. We are interested in Mac i-Book to run the SMF via a Roland Sound Canvas 8820.
Some questions:
1- Please show me a really good midi player, with: a) a simple and rational visualization of playlists b) the chance to transpose the key
c) the obvious indication of running time. I have a pc, and I use the excellent Van Basaco midi player. Is there anything such for mac?
2- What about the i-book size? 64mb RAM or more?
3- How shall I connect the i-book to the sound canvas? Via USB or via midi port of the expander/serial port of the computer?
4- An obvious question: a Mac is really better than a pc for midi?
please e mail me, I'm in need of true help!

Comments: Hello all!
Just a quick question from a frustrated novice. I have been using
a notation software called "lime" on my Mac. I was unable to open the
manual, as a result there are a few info in regards to Midi that I am
still confused of. I was told that I can use my notation software as a
controller and my midi keyboard as a tone generator or playback, but
after setting up all the external hardware ( midi interface and the
proper cable connection) I am still unable to hear or access the proper
instrument sound. How am I able to assign a particular instrument to
a midi channel when I can't even view the the "general midi" list all
I can hear is a standard piano sound. This is really driving me of the
wall..as of this stage I am in the middle of composing a piece for a
full orchestra and it will help me a great deal if I could hear a
similar instruments sound according to the score..
please anyone out there generous enough to give me some advice...I will
really appreciate it.

Comments: MIDI Composition Activities!!!! Teaching High School MIDI classes have been very fulfilling. However, finding good constructive projects have been challenging. Project can be focus for either sequencer or notation applications. Thanks a million!!!! |

Comments: Hi!
I have been a dyed-in-the-wool MIDI Mac elementary music teacher for
the past 6 years, utilizing Trax, MasterTracks Pro 5 and, last year,
Studio Vision Pro from Opcode (which I greatly enjoyed.)
This next year I am very pleased to say that my district is going to
put together a MIDI lab for us... although I am pretty sure that it is
going to be on the Windows platform. (I tried my best, fellow Mac users!)
I have over 100 MIDI files created through my Mac platform - some
with Trax, MT Pro and SV Pro. I will probably be heading into Cakewalk
(and am actually looking forward to learning other methods.)
My question - will there be a terrible problem changing those Mac files
into something that will be recognized by Cakewalk/Windows? I _do_ know
about saving them in SMF format - I just want to make sure that they
will *still* be accessible! (They involved a lot of hard work!) :-)
How will I go about it? In fact, can I even get a Windows machine to
recognize a floppy or Zip disk created on a Mac?
Any suggestions will be _most_ welcome!
TIA - Dave

Comments: Hi,
Can anyone explain NRPN messages to me? I'm trying to creat a Logic environment layer for my Korg ER-1 Drum machine. I've already done this for my Orbit and BassStation without too much trouble. I'm pretty gened up on MIDI but never have been quite able to get my head round this MSB - LSB stuff? What's it all about?
I have a ANx1 synth with 8 controllers which O/P controller numbers 44 through 48. All I want to do is control the ER-1's parameters via these controller knobs... got that? Please help if you know what I'm talking about.

Comments: I wish to slave a Roland XP-80 Music Workstation to a 24 track recording console and computer in the studio.
The studio consists of ADAT recorders linked by an Alesis BRC running SMPTE timecode. The timecode is then passed to a MOTU MIDI Express which converts it to MTC which runs Emagic LOGIC on a Macintosh computer.
I would like to be able to start the individual song performances on the Roland XP-80 Music Workstation using MIDI from LOGIC. If a simple pedal can start and stop the Roland XP-80 Music Workstation via the control pedal inputs, then there must be a way for the control 100 signal to be sent to start the system playing.
Hoping that someone may be able to come to our assistance

Comments: I've just bought a MIDI controller keyboard for my iMac - an Evolution MK-149 - and I've got some software (Pro Tools Free) and loads of samples. I'm ready to make some music, but I don't want to use Quicktime Instruments - I want to use samples as my instruments, and play them from the keyboard. (This is how I made music on my old Amiga.) It seems so simple, but I can't for the life of me work out how to do it, no matter how much I read about MIDI. Someone, please...put me out of my misery - I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks...........Stef.

Comments: There is a tutorial on sonify.org on how to create RMF files for interactive audio on the web. RMF is an integration of the high quality of Sampled Digital Audio and the small size and flexibility of MIDI. It is interactive so users can control in real time how the music plays.
The tutorial is at:
http://sonify.org/cgi-bin/tutoriallinks/jump.cgi?ID=104
This format is used for interactive audio on the web using Beatnik, but more importantly for Midi composers, it is being incorporated into cell phones, PDAs and more.
We are looking for Midi composers to try to create RMFs and post their work on sonify.org for others to learn from. Any comments on the tutorial and how to make it better would also be appreciated.

Comments: This is just about the last resort for me, and I do hope someone can offer help. "Al" posted something last year in September that sounds like the problem I have ecountered. I just began working at a music library that has an evil MIDI setup including Finale2000b and Practica Musica on a G4, using a MOTU Fastlane USB interface and a Fatar StudioLogic SL-161 CONTROLLER only keyboard (low budget and they didn't even know what MIDI means). They said it worked at one time but the interface adapter was stolen and then they bought the Fastlane. I have tried just about everything and all settings using FreeMIDI and OMS to get Finale to receive the MIDI from the controller for real-time notation. There are so many settings within everything and nothing seems to work! I had some MIDI experience in college, and even their extensive setups using Digital Performer and ProTools were always having problems...
I cant find any settings about the USB connection, only modem and printer port. Is the controller the issue? If there is ANY advice for this situation, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you.

Comments: I NEED HELP,PLEASE!!!!!
I BOUGHT A MAC LC WITH A 12" MONITOR TO RUN 'VS CONSOLE' WITH MY
VS 880 EX. I USED AN OPCODE STUDIO PLUS TWO INTERFACE.
-THE DISPLAY IS TOO SMALL ON THE LC.
'VS CONSOLE' WILL ONLY USE OMS. NOTHING ELSE!
I GOT A BLUEBERRY IMAC 333 AND A KEYSPAN TWIN SERIAL ADAPTER.
-THE KEYSPAN WONT PERMIT OMS TO RECOGNISE THE OPCODE THRU THE USB BUS.(IT WILL RECOGNISE MY LASERWRITER II, THOUGH, SO THATS GOOD!}
I BOUGHT A MOTU FASTLANE INTERFACE-A MISTAKE!
-THE FASTLANES' DRIVERS ARE ALL IMBEDDED IN 'FREEMIDI', AND VS CONSOLE WILL NOT WORK WITH FREEMIDI AT ALL!
QUESTIONS-
-DOES ANYONE HAVE OMS 2.3.6?
I HAVE 2.3.8 , AND FEEL THE OLDER VERSION WILL LET MY OPCODE BE RECOGNIZED BY THE KEYSPAN/IMAC COMBINATION. AM I WRONG?
-DOES ANYONE HAVE FREEMIDI VERSION 1.3?
I HEAR ALOT OF THESE CONFLICTS WITH OMS DID NOT HAPPEN WITH THIS EARLIER VERSION.
-IS THERE A LARGER MONITOR I CAN GET FOR MY OLD MAC LC, OR AT LEAST RESIZE THE DISPLAY OF A PROGRAM THAT DOES NOT HAVE SCROLL BARS OR RESIZE ELEMENTS?
IF I COULD DO THAT, THAT WOULD SOLVE MY WHOLE PROBLEM!
I REALLY LOVE THE MAC. I HAVE A PC, BUT THERE JUST IS NOT A GOOD PROGRAM TO RUN THE VS880 FOR THE PC. I'VE SEEN 'VS PRO' IT SUCKS AND CRASHES ALOT, AND JUST DOES NOT COMPARE TO 'VS CONSOLE'! PLEASE HELP! EITHER HERE OR AT MY E-MAIL ADDRESS-SSIFUENTEZ@EARTHLINK.NET.

Comments: IF ANYONE CAN HELP--->---> I've got a Power Macintosh 6500/225 on which I installed Opcode's Studio Vision Pro. I've hooked up an Evolution MK-261 Keyboard through a Midiman Mini Macman interface into the printer port. Using OMS, I created a midi setup, with the input coming from the printer port (the keyboard). My problem is that though the keyboard succesfully controls the application, I cannot hear anything out of my computer speakers when I'm recording or playing back what I've recorded, even though I can look at a visual representation of the music. This has left me INCREDIBLY frustrated!! I'm thinking that I'm missing that I need to somehow configure Studio Vision Pro so that it uses the built-in computer synth (with quicktime?) as the audio output, but my knowledge of midi and Studio Vision Pro isn't good enough to know how to fix the problem.
I would be very grateful if however could help me out

Comments: Hey! I found this site through AltaVista cause it mentions CyberSound Studio, a now-discontinued software synthesizer put out by InVision Interactive (which I think is also discontinued). I have a PowerBook G3 1999 Lombard Series, 333Mhz, and I now have CyberSound Studio version 2.0.
The problem is: I'm using FreeMIDI, not OMS; and when I put the CyberSound FreeMIDI Driver in my FreeMIDI Folder in my System Folder,
my FreeMIDI configuration refuses to recognize any trace of CyberSound, and it causes Type 12 Errors in both my FreeMIDI 1.44 Setup and in Digital Performer (my sequencing program).
CyberSound Studio version 2.0 is from 1996. Is there a more recent CyberSound driver available, or is there no hope of compatibility between this program and the G3 platform? Help help help.
If anyone has an answer, please feel free to e-mail me. I'm a composer and player and this site is really useful, so thanks already.

Comments: I see this is the first post in a long time. I hope this site is still being updated and visited often. I am in the twin cities area and am interested in MIDI and electronic music. I studied electronic music in college but haven't got into it as much as I hoped since then. I used a Mac in college but now own a PC. I've downloaded some cool programs but have a very limited budget for my studio. I've been frustrated by the differences between Macs and PCs. Mainly I've missed the excellent program Turbosynth SC from digidesign. Of all the soft synths I've demoed for the PC, nothing comes close to the ease and power of Turbosynth. I have access to an older mac (I think it is an LC II or LC III) as I understand it Turbosynth v 1.0 should run on this with no problem. I know it might be kind of hard to find but if any one has any ideas where I might be able to get a copy that would be great. Please e-mail me if you know anyone who might sell a copy.
