I took some good MIDI classes while in college as a music major. I worked with Macs and a great setup with many modules and controlling devises. Needless to say, that was 4 years ago and I just got a home setup going. I used to know Finale, Vision Pro, Galaxy Plus, Turbo Synth and other progs just like the back of my hand. Those were the days.
Hardware:
I now have a Pentium 233, Sound Blaster AWE64, Fatar controller, and an Alesis NanoSynth Mod all hooked into my stereo.
Software:
Cakewalk Pro Finale 97 (used most) Studio 4 Band in a Box

I have only been working with MIDI since December of 1996.Before then I worked mainly with S3Ms.
Since I started writing, I have always done kind of odd music. I don't like to stick to a certain style, I just do what sound good at the time. Contemporary, world, techno, whatever.
