Comments: I haven't been here long enough to comment, but while I have not previously been interested in MIDI capabilities, I am now at least a bit curious.

Comments: To whoever is reading this, I think that this pages is a great page and I wish I had found it sooner:) I really thought it ware incredibly useful. I own a Mac and such and this page was many times more useful than any other I have seen on the net. I have one suggestion, I think that maybe you have a section for each platform that contains useful links to needed or highly recommended ware (I am so glad you had a link to the new QuickTime [3.0]). Thanks a lot, Jayan Vatassery.

Comments: I am having a problem loading Midi Typer. Every time I try to download this file I get 'attempt to access site failed'. Is this file located anywhere else on AOL or on the Web?

Comments:

I recently picked up an original Roland MPU-401 MIDI interface and would like to use it with my PC. This is an external MIDI interface that connects to the computer with a male D25 connector. It looks like it attaches to the parallel port, but I get this nagging feeling that that can't be right. I've also tried connecting it to the serial port without any luck. I'm trying to install it under Windows 3.1 with the supplied driver. Windows expects a default port address of 0300 and IRQ of 2/9.
Here's what I believe my problems might be:

A. The MPU-401 does not connect to either the parallel or serial port. If not, what does it connect to? Is there some internal card that was originally supplied with the interface that I need to make it work?

B. The MPU-401 does connect to the parallel or serial port, but there is a setup file that has to execute to reprogram the port?

C. The MPU-401 driver supplied with Win3.1 is for a MPU-401 compatible MIDI port on a General MIDI sound card of some kind and I need to get a real driver for the original external MPU-401.

D. None of the above.

If anyone would like to share their experience with me, I'd be most grateful.

Randy

Comments: Can anybody recommend a good hardware for play back of MIDI files on my Macintosh. I am currently using QuickTime to play MIDI-files, while some of them are good, others sound like a screaming cat. I am not a musician, all I need is, being able to play the MIDI- files with a realistic sound (If I had a PC, I could for example use SoundBlaster AWE, but I haven't been able to find any soundcard for Mac at all). What other option do I have? Thanks for your help

Comments: Great work! The information you present was very handy - I got the files working! Has anyone there considered the question of MIDI on the new (blue) Macs? They have no serial port. Presumably, USB MIDI interfaces are around the corner, but will all my old software work with them? Or should I just stick to my trusty beige Mac? Thanks again! - jz

Comments: Hi Everyone! I haven't been here for awhile, so I thought I'd see how things were doing here. I created this website back in 1995, and while I passed it on to David in late 1997, it's nice to come back here and see that people are still posting things and finding value in it. Later, -Tim

Comments: I have carefully followed the advice about converting downloaded Midi files to enable my sequencer to load them, but without success. I used ResEdit as described, and I used MidiTyper but still Cubase will not open the files. The files work OK with quicktime. They also appear in the open window of Cubase, but don't go any further. Do you know anything else I can try or sources of advice. Many thanks, Steve

Comments: Hello, congradulations on your web site, it seems to be a good site with good relative information. I and A friend of mine are in the process of create our very own Performance oriented MIDI Sequencer application. There is no code yet (it is at a very early stage since it started about 1 1/2 month ago, but the analysis (and list of features to be implemented) is close to being done, if we have any code right now it is to test a few things out before actually going for the application itself. We aim this project to be multi platform and support Windows 95 to NT, Linux (and other unix based), and Mac OS 7.5 and up. We are currently 2 in this project (although we have a newsgroup of 26 members) we are looking to add a few more good coders to our "arsenal" so to speak :-) if you know anybody that might be interested go ahead and give them my email address :-). This project is not aimed at commercial use, it is a project for learning MIDI development, C++ and OOP techniques and such. We decided on this project because the current sequencer apps (for both Macs and PCs) did not fulfill the needs of live performances sequencing. The project is quite interestiing and is a good oppurtunity to quickly become quite knowledgable in the MIDI industry. So please do let me know, also we've searched what I would like to call THE WHOLE WEB for MIDI related information, SYSEX commands and the likes, perhaps we have information you might find useful. Hoping to hear from you soon, and again congradulation on a site well done and well organized :-) Best regards, Stephane Richard (software Developer)

Comments: I compose MIDI music on my computer (Steinberg "Cubasis AV" on Windows '98) but for PERFORMANCES, I like to pre-record my back-up instrumentation (in MIDI) onto an external device, such as a disc recorder, so I can PLAYBACK from that device while I play keyboards live along with it (MIDI Merge). This way I do not have to bring an entire Computer to my gigs. I already do this with an old Brother "MIDI Disc Recorder", playing from Cubasis into the Brother. But alas, the Brother has limited on-board memory, and my tunes over-run often, so I ditch some tracks (etc.) so everything fits. Now, Brother no longer makes such a device. WHO DOES? Thanks for your help. R.K. in L.A.

Comments: "Once you've transferred the file to your PC (and ensured it's a SMF), you may find that your MIDI application (a MIDI file player or sequencer, etc) will not recognize your files as MIDI files. Usually, they simply won't appear in the 'Open' dialog box. The reason for this is that the application has no way of knowing this is a MIDI file. PC's normally use the extension .MID on MIDI files so that applications will recognize them." OK, so how do you convert the files to .mid so your PC will recognize them? Thanks for a site that is at least tantalizing, and at best most informative.
